Horse Code Activity
Do you enjoy funny jokes and cracking codes? If so, test your skills to see if you can break the horseshoe code and decipher the answers to a few fun horse jokes! Kids ages 5 and up can match each symbol with its corresponding letter to complete four hilarious horse jokes. The entire worksheet should take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete. If you run into trouble accessing the activity pages, consult this guide to printables.
Activity Directions
Follow these instructions to crack the code:
- Start with the first blank line. Look at the symbol above it, then find that symbol in the horse code.
- Write the letter that corresponds with that symbol on the blank line.
- Repeat for all blank lines until you have a completed answer.
- Repeat these steps for all the jokes.
Extension Activities
Now that you've learned a new secret language, see how you can use it to communicate with others.
- Make up your own horse code. Choose another horse-related image or combine several to create your own code. Draw your new symbol(s) next to the correct blank spaces for each joke answer.
- Write your own jokes, then use the horse code to create a new challenge for a friend. They can use the horseshoe code provided to find the answer to your joke.
- Send a picture of the code to a friend and see if you can communicate with each other using Horse Code.
Horse Sudoku
Use your logic skills to place the horse-related images in their correct spots on each of the three blank sudoku-inspired grids in this printable. Kids ages 6 and up who love a challenge or teens or adults looking for a fun puzzle can likely complete these horse sudoku grids in 20 to 30 minutes each.
Activity Directions
The printable has three puzzles of varying difficulty levels. The three-by-three puzzle is the easiest, while the four-by-four and five-by-five grids present more of a challenge.
- Cut out the images provided on the last two pages of the printable.
- For each puzzle, set or glue the appropriate images into each square on the grid. Remember, each image can only appear once per row and once per column.
- For the easy puzzle, you'll only need the horseshoe, saddle, and horse images.
- For the medium puzzle, you'll only need the horseshoe, saddle, horse, and boot images.
- For the hard puzzle, you'll need all the images used for the other puzzles and the apples.
Extension Activities
Keep the fun going all day long when you use the activity sheet for other fun puzzles and challenges.
- Instead of gluing the images onto the grids, set them in their spots so you can reuse the grid. Find and cut out other horse-related images to see if you can fit them into the puzzle, too.
- Get the most mileage from your printouts by using the blank grids to complete standard sudoku puzzles first. For the three-by-three grid, you can use the numbers 1, 2, and 3 or the letters A, B, and C.
- Challenge yourself to find as many correct solutions as possible, since there can be more than one.
- Use the grid to draw a picture of your favorite kind of horse. Print a photo and cut it to the same size as the entire grid. Draw the same size grid on your photo. Start drawing on a blank grid one square at a time by copying the matching square on your photo.
Horse Word Search
Doing a word search can be a great way to keep your brain sharp, and one that uses equine terms is fantastic fun for horse lovers. Discover some new words while having fun alone or with a friend. Children over the age of 5 can try their hand at the beginner search, while older children and adults will enjoy the worksheet listed as "challenging."
Activity Directions
There are two word search grids based on difficulty level. Print out your preferred puzzle and grab a pencil or pen to get started.
- The words listed in the word bank are hidden within the grid.
- Beginning with the first word, or the word of your choice, scan the grid from left to right, looking for the word's first letter.
- Once you've found the first letter, look around it to locate the second letter and so on until you've located the entire word.
- Remember, words can be forward, backward, upward, downward, or even diagonal.
- Circle the word and repeat with all the listed words.
Extension Activities
Even after you've completed one or both horse word searches, you can still continue the fun! Try these additional activities with your completed word search.
- Create a story using the words you found. Use your imagination! Your horse could come from another planet or even live in your backyard. Write the story out or recite it to a friend or family member.
- Are there any other words hiding in the grid? Discover what other terms you can find in the word search.
- Look up the meaning of each word. Depending on which puzzle you complete, the terms could describe a certain horse life stage, breed, or anatomical structure.
