While it may not be a paw-pularity contest, some cat breeds are more in demand than others. Where does your kitty line up in the list of the most popular cat breeds? We checked Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) statistics to come up with our list of which cats are the most sought-after.
The most popular cat breed is none other than the cuddly ragdoll. Ragdolls are large, fluffy cats with color points and blue eyes. Some ragdolls go limp when picked up, supposedly because they enjoy attention so much, and this is how the breed got its name. They are extremely docile, eager to please, and relaxed, and they tend to bond closely with their human companions.
Although ragdolls have long fur, they don't have an undercoat, which means they require only minimal grooming, such as regular brushing.
Maine coons are one of the largest cat breeds, along with being very popular. Their thick coats are suited to the cold climates of Northeast America, and some cats of this breed even have a ruff on their neck that makes them look almost like a lion. They come in a huge range of colors, including calico patterns and multi-color coats. Maine coons tend to love people and like to follow their owners from room to room, but most are too busy and energetic to be solely lap cats.
This is the official state cat for the U.S. state of Maine.
Devon rex cats are known for their alien-like appearance and wavy hair, but these cats are also incredibly energetic and playful pets. While they bond closely with their owners and are gentle and affectionate, they can be skittish around new people or large groups. Since Devon rexes do not have much fur, they need to be kept indoors in a temperature-controlled environment.
The exotic cat breed has the face and build of a Persian, but they have short hair, which makes this cat easier to groom. These popular cats also have easy-going personalities like Persians, but they're more energetic and playful. They get along well with other pets, but they do not like to be left alone for long periods.
The popular Persian breed is sometimes called the "flower" of cat breeds because of their pansy-like faces, but it's their easy-going personality that really makes them popular pets. These cats are more docile than the average cat, and they love to be held and cuddled. However, their long coats require regular brushing and even the occasional bath.
In addition to white, Persians come in an incredible variety of colors and patterns.
The British shorthair has a distinct look with a strong build and adorable round face. Even though they come in several different colors, grey or "blue" is the most popular. This breed is excellent with children, likes to play, and loves to cuddle. British shorthairs like human companionship, but they don't mind being left alone at times.
It's no wonder Abyssinians are so popular because they're the smartest cat breed of all. These cats love to explore, spend time with their families, and play, although they are sometimes reluctant to meet new people. Abyssinians are energetic and enjoy attention, so you'll need to spend a lot of time with this spunky little cat.
Scottish fold cats are popular as pets because of their beauty and the excellent companionship they offer. The breed's most notable characteristic is their small, folded ears. You've probably seen videos of these cuties on social media doing all sorts of funny things. These cats are docile and loyal to their human families. They tend to get spurts of energy, particularly as young cats, and race through the house at times.
The Sphynx, also called a Canadian Hairless, is practically hairless, although most do carry a fine fuzz that makes them feel like a peach. Sphynx cats are highly intelligent and curious, and they tend to be friendly with strangers. Since they seek warmth, they are likely to cuddle up with their owners at night.
Because of their exposed skin, Sphynx cats need special care in the sun and cold weather.
The large Siberian cat breed is as handsome as they are sweet. One of the things that makes them so popular as pets is the fact that they're the most hypoallergenic cat of all breeds, despite their long hair. These cats are independent, vocal, and love adventure.
These popular cat breeds are well-loved for many reasons, but they're all very different. Each has their own quirks, strengths, and appearance. Whether or not your cat's breed made the list, we still think they're incredibly awesome.
